Tears with my morning coffee. That’s not the best way to start the day. Yet, that’s how it began when I turned on the news and saw one of the nation’s most beloved actors, Mickey Rooney, 91, pouring out his heart to lawmakers about the abuse that made him feel powerless against supposed loved ones.

When I was in the first grade, I had a particular interest in the number 100. I liked the way it sounded and looked. When I informed my teacher that I planned on living to 100, she didn’t laugh.

Whom do I trust? If you really want to know, I trust my friends, otherwise they wouldn’t be my friends. I trust most family members; the ones I don’t I keep at arm’s length. Finally, if you want to know if I trust my government, the answer is more complicated.
