Maine: Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment Now Underway

PORTLAND — Affordable Care Act (ACA) Open Enrollment runs from November 1st through Dec. 15 and is the only opportunity each year to review and make changes to your Health Insurance Marketplace plan coverage for 2018.

AARP Maine is encouraging all Mainers who do not have health care coverage through their job or a government program, such as Medicare or Medicaid, to review their coverage during the six weeks of ACA Open Enrollment.

“Mainers need to know that health care coverage is still available through the ACA/ Health Insurance Marketplace and ACA Open Enrollment is your once-a-year opportunity to compare plans to find one that best meets your needs at a price that’s right for you,” said Lori Parham, AARP Maine State Director. “Coverage and cost can vary widely between plans so it is important to review your options carefully before plans go into effect in 2018.”Premiums can vary from year to year and it is considered good practice to explore plan options during Open Enrollment to ensure the best coverage at the lowest affordable price. AARP Maine strongly recommends that Mainers consider their coverage carefully, compare their current plan with other available plans, and change to a different plan during Open Enrollment if it better meets their current needs.

Following is information on finding a plan and where to apply:

  • Online: The best place to start is at www.healthcare.gov. That is where the majority of Mainers in the individual market will shop for a plan. (Note: www.healthcare.gov will be offline for maintenance on Sundays during open enrollment between 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. The only exception is Dec. 10).
  • By telephone: Mainers can also call the Marketplace Call Center at 800-318-2596 and apply over the phone. It accepts calls seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

For in-person help, there are several ways to find assistance. Many nonprofit and community organizations have trained individuals, known as “Navigators,” to help Mainers apply for coverage at no cost.  By plugging in one’s zip code at https://localhelp.healthcare.gov/#/ one can easily find a local Navigator. In Maine, one can also call 2-1-1 to find a local Navigator.

  • In addition, help is available through Maine Community Action Agencies as well as Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC). CAHC’s Consumer Assistance Helpline is 1-800-965-7476 and their website is mainecahc.org.

AARP Maine has prepared an easy to use flyer which helps explain how and where to apply for ACA coverage during Open Enrollment.
